L’indamine, ou bleu de phénylène, s’utilise principalement comme intermédiaire pour la préparation de colorants, aziniques en particulier.

Les indamines en général sont des colorants dérivés de l’indo-aniline et comportant le groupement 略NH au lieu de l’oxygène de la quinone, comme dans l’indamine même. Ce sont des produits de condensation de paradiamines avec une arylamine. Ces produits n’ont que peu d’importance technique comme colorants; leur importance réside dans le fait que ce sont des intermédiaires dans la synthèse d’autres colorants: azines, thiazines et oxazines.
